AnonymASS - Hiding Behind The Tubes

First I wanted to say, sorry for this and the last installment of Room362 being non-technical. They are topics that I feel strongly about and so felt impelled to share.

One of the biggest problems in the world, IMHO, are people who have unfounded hate. This is compounded by the anonymity of the Internet. Allowing that hate to have no reprocussion or identity. Let me also say I have a deep respect for Free Speech, the depths of which I fear, few truly know. What I don't have a respect for is people who abuse that right. It's ultimately a respect of your fellow man/woman/it, that transends any nationality, race, creed, or color.

Now that you know where I stand, let me step down to a slightly lower soap box. On my last post about ethics, I received a comment from an individual who posted under the guise of not only a false email and name, but also from a proxied address. They were on my side of the argument and were digusted with Dave's. His/her/it's post was pointed, rude, and had no constructive criticism or facts. It was deleted. It does not deserve a direct response. So I am issuing a response to all who tred here.

These types of posts are allowed to flow on other forums, blogs, and mediums of the Internet. They WILL NOT be allowed here. Period.

You may think of me what you will, pompous, self righteous. I don't care. I will keep my bit of the Internet clean how I see fit.

Lastly, I hope I demonstrated this fact already, but I want to reiterate it here. I will never delete comments on any side of any discussion I have here, even if I disagree with the comment. I enjoy debat and discussion. I am religous in my faith fight for free speech and it's application on the internet.

You have something to say fine. You better do it with respect or you can take your posts to slashdot, digg, or some other place. They won't see the light of day here.

Hey Rob, I'm sorry dude. I have absolutely no room to call people out on matters of right and wrong, ethics or even the color of clothes they wear. If you're referring to the comment at http://twitpic.com/21n2p" rel="nofollow">http://twitpic.com/21n2p, that's pretty tame. As for the ego bit, I can only offer that I did contact you privately and not in a public forum. I wasn't looking for attention and didn't mean to disparage you or bring injury to your reputation. The fact that you took this out into the open speaks to your character. Smaller folks would have told me where to go and in no uncertain terms. I admire you for that Rob.

Now then, I hope to be done with all of this. I've got to get back to stroking my ego. :p

Bull, You have every right to call someone out if you disagree. It's a human right. I brought it on to my blog because I think it was a good healthy debate.

This is another good (long winded, inflammatory) post about Trolls: http://is.gd/ncT0" rel="nofollow">http://is.gd/ncT0

Hi,

I caught this on SBN, I just wanted to thank you for making sure discourse is civil, at least in your bit of the internet. I wrote about a case where 2 Yale students were harassed and the site operator refused to take the posts down. Now the ramifications may be far reaching... Just in case you didn't get it...

I am very disappointed that you labeled my post as hateful and without any constructivism. I think you should have and still should allow my voice to have been heard and evaluated for itself although now you have clearly waited things now.
My post had 3 arguments.
1. I argued that the other commenters had insulted the hak5 community by comparing them to nothing more than a group of ready to be delinquent teenagers
2. Whether there is a significant difference between these statements: “imagine that YOU could get free internet” and “there is a vulnerability that could allow SOMEONE to get free internet.
3. That knowledge is knowledge. There is no difference between a criminal showing someone how to break the law, and a “security researcher.” The difference lies on the morality and ethics of the person being taught.

I used no foul language like F#@$% you and that is #@%! Also, about being anonymous on the internet… how much of MORAL difference is there between sudo names like Mubix, Axor, etc and anonymous. Neither actually identify a person.

If you want a name, you can call me Sw1tchRight.

If the point of your previous post was to choose a psychological standing that would re-unite your friends over your decision to air a controversial segment by using the common unite against an enemy tactic. I can be your scapegoat. I like you very much as a person and appreciate the things that you have indirectly taught me.

Oh and P.S. I post anonymously and hide because I don’t live in a country where I can be as free about things as you probably can.

Sorry if this has caused you anguish. I appreciate everything you do for the hacker community.

Sw1tchRight

P.S. Try sending me an email. My email is valid.

Hey Sw1tchRight:

Your voice is being heard. You can find it over on my blog at http://trustedsignal.blogspot.com/2009/03/i-must-remove-this-log-from-my-eye.html" rel="nofollow">http://trustedsignal.blogspot.com/2009/03/i-mus....

I'm the one you say has a STAGGERING, vomit inducing ego. You obviously don't know me.

I'm the one who is selling snake oil, though I don't sell anything, and I have a vested interest in keeping people uninformed, though I've been on the record for years advocating and practicing responsible full disclosure and even said I had no issue with the information being shared.

Mubix and I were having a civilized discourse about ideas. I had much respect for Mubix before this and have even more now. After considerable thought and internal debate, I publicly apologized to Mubix. I have no room to be calling other people out on any kind of issue. I felt uncomfortable when I first considered mentioning this to Mubix and I should have trusted my gut. My initial contact with him was in private, I was not seeking ego feeding public exposure.

I don't know you and you don't know me. I won't talk shit on you because I believe it's not what goes into a person that makes him or her unclean, it's what comes out.

Eleanor Roosevelt said, "Great minds discuss ideas, average minds discuss events and small minds discuss people." In light of your post, that's up on my blog, what kind of mind are you Sw1tchRight?

March 13, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterDave Hull

Sw1tchRight:
1. Your first comment, under 'blah' was nothing but name calling and finger pointing.
2. Your second comment (if that was you again), called Dave a fraud, and was basically more finger pointing.
3. Your third comment however, is respectful, intelligent and mature. I agree with all three points that you make to a length.
4. No, you didn't swear, but you weren't respecting other peoples opinion either. That is something I won't tolerate on a site that I control.

As for your name. It was not the fact that you chose to remain anonymous, it was that you did so AND were rude that made that combination. Pseudo names help out in that aspect, they conceal the identity for those in countries like yours, but still show a bit of back bone so that you (your pseudo name at least) can be held accountable for your comments, good or bad.

The point of my the post in which we are commenting under was created to serve warning to anyone, not to rally. Sort of like the rules set on the GNUCitizen blog (Thanks to @tnicholson for the reference)

You are free to post here as long as you follow similar rules that they have. I hold no grudges and I'm always open to people would like to intelligently, maturely, talk about any topic.

And as for the scape goat. I prefer cow sacrifices. Goat blood is sticky and difficult for the intern to clean up.

Somethings have been cleared up now. I made a total of 2 comments. My first had three points and closely resembles my former one that was actually posted. So, it looks like I wasn't the only one who commented anonymously...
Although I gave my genuine email each time. @yahoo.com

So, I never attacked Dave. I don't know who he is. If you still have my first comment that has three points labeled firstly, secondly, and thirdly, I think you should post it.

Dave, I hope the intended recipient of your quote sees what you have written. I must say though that you aren't likely to win friends and influence people by attacking them back whether you occupy the high ground or not. (I am not defending the snake oil guy either. Just saying) After all, how would you answer your own question without sounding egotistical? Would anyone ever truly think or admit that they are small minded anyway. ;)

So to end, please don't associate my name Sw1tch with the other anonymous quote. I'll use it from now on to clear a few things up.

Love you guys! Look forward to reading your blogs.

You just brought a tear to my eye. This is probably one of the most eloquent ranting posts about the douche bags that think that they have a right to say the most vile and heinous garbage under the guise of 'Freedom of Speech' and the general anonymity of the internet. I whole-heartedly agree with you, having held a similar mantra in regards to the tubes for quite some time now.
